Indicator: GDP per unit of energy use (PPP $ per kg of oil equivalent) - Ranking   2024

Description GDP per unit of energy use measures the amount of economic output generated per kilogram of oil equivalent (kgoe) of energy consumed. It is calculated using GDP expressed in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms, converted into current international dollars based on PPP rates from the 2017 International Comparison Program (ICP) round. An international dollar has the same purchasing power over GDP as a U.S. dollar has in the United States. The indicator therefore expresses the economic output obtained from each unit of energy used, while allowing for international comparisons that account for differences in price levels between countries.
A cosa serve The indicator is used to analyze energy efficiency and the relationship between economic activity and energy consumption. It can support comparisons of energy productivity across countries and over time, help identify changes in the energy intensity of economic production, and contribute to assessments of progress toward more energy-efficient and less energy-intensive economic systems. It can also be considered alongside indicators on energy consumption, renewable energy, and greenhouse gas emissions to provide a broader picture of the relationship between economic development and energy use.
Interpretation: A higher value indicates greater economic output per unit of energy consumed, while a lower value indicates lower energy productivity. However, the indicator does not measure the technical efficiency of energy use alone, as it is also influenced by factors such as economic structure, industrial composition, technology, climate, and the relative importance of energy-intensive activities within an economy.
