Indicator: Tariff rate, most favored nation, simple mean, all products (%) - Ranking   2022

Description The Tariff Rate, Most Favored Nation (MFN), Simple Mean, All Products measures the unweighted average of the most favored nation tariff rates applied to all traded products subject to tariffs. The indicator is expressed as a percentage and is calculated across tariff lines covering all products. Trade data are classified according to the Harmonized System (HS) at the six- or eight-digit level, while tariff-line data are matched to Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) Revision 3 codes to define commodity groups. Because it is a simple mean, each tariff line receives equal weight regardless of the value or volume of trade associated with that product.
A cosa serve The indicator is used to analyse and compare the level of import tariff protection across economies and to monitor changes in trade policy over time. It can support research on trade openness, market access and the evolution of tariff barriers, as well as international comparisons of trade-policy regimes. The indicator can also help identify broad changes in a country's tariff structure, although more detailed analysis may require complementary measures such as trade-weighted tariff rates, preferential tariff rates and tariff dispersion across products.
Interpretation: A higher percentage indicates a higher average MFN tariff rate across tariff lines, while a lower percentage indicates a lower average tariff rate. Because the measure is unweighted, a tariff applied to a product with very little trade receives the same weight in the calculation as a tariff applied to a highly traded product.
