Indicator: Tariff rate, most favored nation, weighted mean, all products (%) - Ranking 2022
Description
The Tariff Rate, Most Favored Nation (MFN), Weighted Mean, All Products measures the average MFN tariff rate applied to imported products, with each tariff rate weighted according to the corresponding product import shares for each trading partner. The indicator is expressed as a percentage. Trade data are classified according to the Harmonized System (HS) at the six- or eight-digit level, while tariff-line data are matched to Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) Revision 3 codes to define commodity groups and import weights. The import weights are calculated using trade data from the United Nations Statistics Division's Commodity Trade (Comtrade) database. Unlike the simple mean tariff rate, this measure gives greater weight to products and trading relationships that account for a larger share of actual imports.
A cosa serve
The indicator is used to analyse the level and evolution of tariff barriers affecting a country's imports and to compare trade-policy conditions across economies. It can support research on trade openness, import protection, market access and changes in tariff policy. By incorporating actual import weights, it also helps assess how changes in tariff rates affect the products and trading relationships that are economically significant for a country. However, the indicator should be distinguished from an effective tariff rate based on tariff revenues, since it measures statutory MFN rates weighted by import shares.
Interpretation: A higher percentage indicates a higher average MFN tariff burden across a country's observed import structure, while a lower percentage indicates lower average tariff protection. Because the measure is import-weighted, products representing a larger share of imports have a greater influence on the resulting tariff rate.
