Indicator: Ores and metals imports (% of merchandise imports) - Ranking   2025

Description The Ores and Metals Imports (% of Merchandise Imports) indicator measures the share of a country's merchandise imports represented by ores and metals. Ores and metals comprise commodities classified under SITC (Rev. 3) sections 27 (crude fertilizer and minerals, not elsewhere specified), 28 (metalliferous ores and metal scrap), and 68 (non-ferrous metals). The indicator is expressed as a percentage of total merchandise imports, which include goods whose economic ownership is transferred between non-residents and residents, excluding specific categories such as goods under merchanting, non-monetary gold, and certain components of travel, construction, and government goods and services.
A cosa serve The indicator is used to analyse international trade patterns, import dependence and the structure of national economies. It can support assessments of a country's exposure to changes in global commodity prices, disruptions in mineral and metal supply chains, and shifts in industrial demand. It is also relevant for analysing resource security, manufacturing and infrastructure requirements, and the external trade implications of dependence on imported raw materials and metals. When examined over time, changes in the indicator can reveal structural transformations in a country's production and trade patterns.
Interpretation: A higher percentage indicates that ores and metals account for a larger share of total merchandise imports, while a lower percentage indicates a smaller relative role of these commodities in the country's import structure. The indicator measures the composition of imports, not the absolute value or physical quantity of ores and metals imported.
