Indicator: GNI, PPP (current international $) - Ranking   2024

Description The GNI, PPP (current international $) indicator, published by the World Bank, measures gross national income (GNI) in current international dollars, converted using purchasing power parities (PPPs). GNI represents the total income earned by all residents within an economic territory during an accounting period and is equal to GDP plus income received from abroad minus income paid abroad. PPPs convert different national currencies into a common unit while accounting for differences in price levels between countries. This makes PPP-based comparisons more suitable for comparing the volume of economic activity and the average material well-being of populations than comparisons based solely on market exchange rates. The indicator is expressed in current prices, so it is not adjusted for inflation over time. The World Bank has linked the series to produce a consistent historical time series, although historical observations may not be directly comparable with other national accounts series because of changes in methodologies, source data, and base years.
A cosa serve The indicator is used to compare the overall income generated by residents of different economies on a common purchasing-power basis. It is particularly relevant for analyzing international differences in economic scale, material living conditions, and the relative purchasing power of national income. When divided by population, it provides the basis for GNI per capita, PPP, which is widely used in international development and income-level analysis. Researchers can also use the indicator alongside GDP, GNI at market exchange rates, and other PPP-adjusted measures to distinguish between differences arising from domestic production, international income flows, price levels, and exchange rates. Because the series is expressed in current international dollars, it should not be interpreted as a measure of real growth over time without appropriate adjustment for inflation.
