Indicator: Out-of-pocket expenditure (% of current health expenditure) - Ranking   2024

Description The Share of Out-of-Pocket Payments of Total Current Health Expenditures measures the proportion of a country's current health expenditure that is paid directly out of pocket by households. Out-of-pocket payments are expenditures on health goods and services directly financed by households at the time of use. The indicator is expressed as a percentage of total current health expenditure, showing the relative contribution of direct household payments to the financing of health care.
A cosa serve The indicator is used to analyse health-financing systems and compare the relative role of household payments across countries and over time. It is particularly relevant for assessing financial protection and the extent to which health-care costs are transferred directly to households. It can help identify health systems where households account for a substantial proportion of health financing and can be analysed alongside indicators of catastrophic health expenditure, poverty and health-service coverage to provide a broader assessment of financial protection.
Interpretation: A higher percentage means that a larger share of current health expenditure is financed directly by households through out-of-pocket payments, while a lower percentage indicates a smaller relative role for direct household financing. The indicator measures the share of health expenditure, not the absolute amount paid by households or the affordability of health care.
