Indicator: GDP per unit of energy use (constant 2021 PPP $ per kg of oil equivalent) - Ranking   2024

Description The GDP per Unit of Energy Use indicator measures the amount of economic output generated for each kilogram of oil equivalent of energy used. It is expressed in constant 2021 international dollars at purchasing power parity (PPP) per kilogram of oil equivalent. PPP-adjusted GDP is converted into constant 2021 international dollars using purchasing power parity rates, with an international dollar representing the same purchasing power over GDP as a U.S. dollar in the United States. The indicator therefore measures the economic value generated relative to the amount of energy consumed, while controlling for differences in national price levels.
A cosa serve The indicator is used to analyse trends in energy productivity, compare energy efficiency across economies and assess changes in the relationship between economic activity and energy consumption. It can support research on energy efficiency, economic development, decoupling of economic growth from energy use, and the transition toward less energy-intensive production. When analysed over time and alongside indicators such as energy intensity, renewable-energy shares and greenhouse-gas emissions, it can help evaluate broader changes in the sustainability and efficiency of economic activity.
Interpretation: A higher value indicates greater economic output generated per kilogram of oil equivalent of energy used, corresponding to higher energy productivity. A lower value indicates lower economic output per unit of energy consumed. The indicator should not be interpreted as a direct measure of technical efficiency alone, since it is also influenced by economic structure, technology, climate, energy mix and the composition of production.
