Indicator: Out-of-pocket health expenditure per capita, PPP (current international $) - Ranking   2024

Description The Out-of-Pocket Expenditure per Capita, PPP (Current International $) indicator measures health expenditure paid directly out of pocket by households, expressed in current international dollars at purchasing power parity (PPP). An international dollar has the same purchasing power over health-related goods and services as a U.S. dollar has in the United States, according to the PPP conversion factors. The indicator therefore measures the average amount of health expenditure directly financed by households per person while adjusting for differences in the general price levels between countries.
A cosa serve The indicator is used to analyse and compare the level of direct household health expenditure across countries on a purchasing-power-adjusted basis. It can support international assessments of health-care financing, household participation in health expenditure and differences in the resources devoted directly to health care. It is particularly useful when comparing countries with substantially different price levels. However, it should be complemented by indicators such as out-of-pocket expenditure as a share of current health expenditure or household income when assessing the financial burden of health care on households.
Interpretation: A higher value indicates a greater amount of health expenditure paid directly by households per person after accounting for differences in purchasing power, while a lower value indicates a smaller PPP-adjusted amount. Because the indicator is expressed in current international dollars, it should not be confused with a constant-price measure of real health expenditure over time.
