Indicator: Sex ratio at birth (male births per female births) - Ranking   2024

Description The Sex Ratio at Birth measures the number of male births per female births in a population. It is a demographic indicator describing the relative proportion of male and female live births occurring during a given period. The indicator is expressed as a ratio, with a value of 1.00 representing one male birth for every female birth. Under normal demographic conditions, the ratio generally shows a slight biological predominance of male births, although the observed value may vary across populations and over time.
A cosa serve The indicator is used to monitor demographic patterns, assess population composition and analyse changes in the balance between male and female births. It can support population projections and demographic studies and can help identify unusually high or low sex ratios that may warrant further investigation. When substantial deviations persist over time or across population groups, the indicator can also serve as a starting point for examining possible influences such as fertility behaviour, demographic selection, data-registration issues or other social and demographic factors.
Interpretation: A value above 1.00 indicates more male births than female births, while a value below 1.00 indicates more female births than male births. The indicator should be interpreted in the context of demographic patterns and data quality rather than as a standalone measure of gender equality or population well-being.
